COURSE TITLE: The Studio: Cinematography

Course Objectives:
From digital cinema cameras to lens systems, framing to camera movement, students will explore the core principles and techniques of cinematography used in professional film and television production. The course focuses on visual storytelling through composition, exposure, movement, and collaboration with the lighting department to create compelling cinematic imagery. Students will gain hands-on experience operating industry-standard camera systems in both studio and on-location environments.

Course Learning Outcomes:
Students will develop an understanding of the mechanics and operation of professional digital cinema cameras, lenses, and camera support systems while learning to select the appropriate tools and techniques to achieve a desired visual style. The course will cover camera operation, shot composition, exposure, focus pulling, movement using dollies and stabilization systems, and on-set workflow practices as they relate to the roles within the Camera Department, including the Director of Photography, Camera Operator, and Assistant Camera positions.
